Computer science (CS) is rapidly becoming a required subject in many schools, and this introduces a need for many teachers to teach CS. Finding ways to increase and diversify the CS teaching force is a critical ongoing effort in CS education.

In partnership with Teach For America (TFA) and University of Oregon, AIR retrospectively analyzed CS teaching preferences, postsecondary majors, and CS postsecondary course credit data from prospective teacher applicants accepted to the TFA corps for participation in cohorts (or “corps”) between 2016 to 2020.

The purpose of this analysis was to help identify patterns related to prospective teachers’ interest in teaching CS, identify methods to diversify the CS teacher workforce across racial and gender groups, and strengthen CS teacher preparation pathways.
