AIR’s Center for Addiction Research and Effective Solutions (CARES) brings a depth of experience on homelessness, housing, and trauma-informed work.
Homelessness can exacerbate substance use disorder (SUD) and can be a consequence of SUD. Individuals with SUD experience homelessness at earlier ages and for longer periods of time. Moreover, drug overdose is a leading cause of death among individuals who experience homelessness.
Systemic racism, lack of available and affordable permanent housing, income-rent gaps, and interfacing with child welfare and/or criminal-legal systems contribute to rising homelessness rates across the country.
