Marcela Movit

Senior Researcher

Marcela A. K. Movit is a senior researcher at AIR. She brings with her expertise in the areas of adult learning, professional development and training, and English language learners. She has played a significant role in the development of several training modules for the California Adult Literacy Professional Development (CALPRO) project as well as the Integrated Education and Training Clinics; she also coordinates the CALPRO Community of Practice and Regional Trainings. She currently is the director of the project that provides technical assistance to Iowa on the English Language Proficiency (ELP) Standards for Adult Education. She served as the deputy director for the Preparing Adult ELLs for Rigorous CCR Standards project, through which those standards were developed, facilitating the development of the standards and the related modules that support teachers’ implementation of the standards.

Dr. Movit recently led the technical assistance task on the Improving Adult English-Language Instruction project, which helped to build states’ capacity to improve and sustain the effectiveness of adult English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers. Drawing on her strong knowledge of the field, she led, developed, and delivered a webinar series for the National Reporting System (NRS) support project on promising practices in data use and program improvement and continues to develop and deliver training for eligible providers on the NRS and its role in program improvement. Dr. Movit also was the deputy director for the Promoting Teacher Effectiveness in Adult Education project, leading significant work done on the project’s environmental scan and managing the development of a toolkit to be used within a teacher induction process.

Dr. Movit’s other areas of expertise include education policy, comparative and international education, bilingual education, language policy in schools, and issues of equal educational opportunity for minority students.
