Nevada Adult Education Professional Development

The State of Nevada has put into place a system of adult basic education that addresses the needs of its adult learners. According the Unified WIOA State Plan for Nevada, “nearly 370,000 adults lack a high school diploma or its equivalent, and nearly 150,000 adults lack proficiency in English.” To support the education programs that serve adult learners, in 2017 the Nevada Department of Education enlisted AIR to manage and run its statewide system of adult education professional development.

AIR’s mission to foster highly effective instruction and programming for Nevada’s adult learners will be met by providing highly customized technical assistance to each of NDE’s seven WIOA, Title II grantees. Each agency has unique capacities, regional contexts, and needs. Through a refined needs assessment followed by technical assistance actions planning, AIR will work collaboratively with each program to strengthen its educational and career pathway services.

The goal of the project is to increase the capacity of the grantees to offer high quality educational services and career pathways for their adult learners. AIR will develop a technical assistance action plan to complete with each of the seven grantees and then conduct TA on select topics based on their needs. Additionally AIR will conduct twice annual regional professional development opportunities, and regularly scheduled webinars on high priority topics such as: standards implementation, using the adult education teacher competencies, accelerated learning, integrated education and training, evidence based reading instruction, and rigorous English as a second language instruction
