The Region 1 Comprehensive Center at AIR builds the capacity of state education agencies (SEAs), local education agencies, and schools to improve instructional quality, address achievement and equity gaps, and improve outcomes for all students on state-identified priority initiatives.
The Region 1 Comprehensive Center at AIR builds the capacity of state education agencies, local education agencies, and schools in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont to improve instructional quality, address achievement and equity gaps, and improve outcomes for all students on state-identified priority initiatives.
Region 1 staff bring substantial technical assistance and content expertise in designing, developing, and implementing strategies to support educational improvement.
Our project plans are tailored to address high-leverage challenges articulated by education leaders in the region. In addition, we work closely with the Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) Northeast and Islands stakeholders to use data and research to improve student outcomes.
Current Projects
Re-envisioning Maine’s Education and Career Pathways
This project features collaboration with the Maine Department of Education (MEDOE) to promote a culture of innovation. Pilot plans will be designed at the district level to implement, study, revise, and scale innovations in career pathways practices.
Developing a Coaching Network to Support Evidence-Based Instructional Strategies to Build K–3 Students’ Foundational Literacy Skills in Massachusetts
With the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), this project will develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to improve K-3 literacy instruction, focusing on increasing the capacity of K-3 educators to provide high-quality, evidence-based instruction to students.
New Hampshire Education-to-Workforce Alignment
This project will identify existing resources and supports for implementing New Hampshire’s 65x25 Initiative. Project activities include the development of a GIS map, training local stakeholders to use the map, and an implementation pilot for addressing key 65x25 topics.
Using GIS Mapping to Build and Strengthen Coherent Systems of Student Support
Working with the Vermont Agency of Education (VAOE), this project uses geographic information system (GIS) maps to support the state’s cradle-to-career initiative. Year 1 of the project will focus on the newly-implemented availability of free early education and care for all Vermont 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds not yet enrolled in kindergarten.
