Roadmap Guides Patient and Family Engagement in Healthcare
Despite growing evidence that patient and family engagement could play a central role in advancing high-quality, affordable, patient-centered care, meaningful engagement was the exception rather than the rule in the U.S. healthcare system after passage of the Accountable Care Act (ACA) in 2010. Building on the ACA’s impetus for change and support for patient-centered care, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation partnered with AIR to bring clarity and an action-oriented vision to the concept of patient and family engagement with a goal of more quickly moving the theory of partnering with patients and families to improve care into practice.
The result was the 2014 Roadmap for Patient and Family Engagement in Healthcare Practice and Research (PDF). Informed by the knowledge, experiences, and evidence of more than 70 people and 60 organizations, the roadmap remains a call to action and a primer on practical ways to partner with patients and their families to improve how care is delivered, including partnering with them in organizational design, governance, and policy making for healthcare.
The roadmap identifies eight strategies that represent both proven practices and promising pathways to meaningful patient and family engagement and the end goals of improved health care and health. Read the Moore Foundation news release to learn more about the roadmap.
