On September 22, 2011, AIR's Tracy Gray will speak at the New York Times' first Schools for Tomorrow conference in New York City. The Times is convening 400 of the most influential leaders in teaching, government, philanthropy, and industry with the goal of harnessing the power of technology to improve the learning experience, democratizing access to quality education, and elevating the American student to a higher level.
Gray oversees the Center for STEM Education and Innovation. In this capacity, she directs three national technology centers funded by the U.S. Department of Education: the National Center for Technology Innovation, the Center for Implementing Technology in Education, and PowerUp What Works. These centers promote the use of best practices in education and technology implementation to improve outcomes for students. She also directs the Microsoft Math Partnership, which provides support to schools to help students become critical thinkers and achieve proficiency in mathematics.
Gray is a nationally recognized expert in education and technology who has led numerous initiatives in the U.S. and abroad that examine the impact of technology on educational achievement. She recently co-edited “Breakthrough Learning: Advancing Educational Innovation With Assistive Technology,” which explores innovations in teaching and learning. Prior to joining AIR, she worked with after-school initiatives to bring technology to their programs as a vice president at the Morino Institute. In the Clinton administration, she served as the first deputy executive director and COO for the Corporation for National Service that launched AmeriCorps. Earlier, Gray served as the deputy director for the American Red Cross AIDS Public Education program. She was a member of the Technical Advisory Group for the U.S.-China e-Language Learning Program (Chengo) funded by the U.S. Department of Education and the Chinese Ministry of Education. A native New Yorker, Gray received her M.A. and Ph.D. from Stanford University.
