Sonam Gupta

Sonam Gupta, an applied economist, has more than 15 years of experience in research, management, design, and implementation of complex, multi-country international development projects. Dr. Gupta’s areas of expertise include labor and workforce development, program evaluation, and mixed methods research.

Dr. Gupta oversees a portfolio of technical assistance and evaluation projects in 25 countries. The key focus of her technical assistance projects that are being implemented in Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala is to strengthen government capacity to effectively enforce labor laws, administer labor justice, use data for effective decision making, and support worker efforts to exercise their right to organize and bargain collectively. Dr. Gupta leads two major technical assistance projects in Mexico on behalf of the Bureau of International Labor Affairs at the U.S. Department of Labor: Compliance in Auto parts through Labor Law Enforcement and Strengthening Government Labor Law Enforcement.

Previously, Dr. Gupta was an assistant professor in the Food and Resource Economics Department at the University of Florida. Dr. Gupta has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, World Bank Economic Review, and Journal of Economic Psychology. Additionally, she spent two years working in India at the International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics and Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations, where her research focused on South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, respectively.
