Too many students, especially those with disabilities, lack basic reading and math skills or have serious disciplinary problems in school. Many of them leave school without graduating and are either unemployed or work in low paying jobs as young adults.

The National Center on Intensive Intervention's (NCII) mission is to build district and school capacity to support implementation of intensive intervention, or data-based individualization, in reading, mathematics, and behavior for students with severe and persistent learning and/or behavioral needs.

AIR manages NCII in partnership with national experts in special education. The Center:

  • reviews commercially available assessment and intervention programs in behavior and academics to help schools identify programs that are best suited for their students;
  • provides ongoing intensive technical assistance, training, and coaching to build district and school capacity to support the implementation of intensive interventions;
  • disseminates information about intensive intervention through the NCII website, www.intensiveintervention.org, monthly webinars, videos addressing frequently asked questions, presentations, articles, an e-newsletter, and other efforts; and
  • conducts ongoing evaluation to inform the field and improve the Center’s approach to building the capacity of states, districts, and schools to deliver intensive interventions and improve student outcomes.
