Multi-Tiered System of Supports (formerly RTI)

A multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) is a proactive and preventative framework that integrates data and instruction to maximize student achievement and support students social, emotional, and behavior needs from a strengths-based perspective. MTSS offers a framework for educators to engage in data-based decision making related to program improvement, high-quality instruction and intervention, social and emotional learning, and positive behavioral supports necessary to ensure positive outcomes for districts, schools, teachers, and students.

Our Work

Since 2007, AIR has provided comprehensive, ongoing MTSS professional learning opportunities to hundreds of school districts in nearly 40 states. From 2007-2012, AIR provided these services under the auspices of the National Center on Response to Intervention (NCRTI), funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs. Since 2012, AIR has continued to provide high-quality MTSS trainings, embedded coaching, and formative and summative evaluation of systems, instruction, and student-level outcomes.

Beginning in 2020, AIR shifted its terminology from RTI to MTSS, to align with evolving language and policies in the field. This change is also reflected in the new Center name (Center on Multi-Tiered System of Supports), website URL, and email address. Additionally, AIR has adapted and added new content and services reflect the full range of supports that comprise a comprehensive, integrated MTSS. AIR’s MTSS work, including the Center on MTSS, strives to support educators in implementing tiered support systems that address students’ academic, behavioral, social, and emotional needs.
